Authentic 4-week German Woodworking Apprenticeships for Hilo’s next generation. Led by Master Carpenter Joachim.
"We are on a mission to bring back the 'Meister' (Master) tradition to Hawaii. In an age of digital screens, we teach our youth the value of precision, the character of hand tools, and the pride of building something that lasts 100 years."
We follow the rigorous standards of the German vocational system, emphasizing that mastery is a journey of thousands of intentional repetitions.
Students work with premium, sustainably sourced hardwoods, learning to read the grain and respect the life of the tree.
Not just a birdhouse, but a foundational understanding of structural integrity and the discipline required for professional excellence.
With over 50 years of experience spanning the rigorous apprenticeship guilds of Germany to high-end architectural builds in Los Angeles, Joachim is Hilo’s "Master in Residence."
His journey began in the Black Forest, where he learned that wood is a living medium that requires both strength and extreme sensitivity. After decades of crafting bespoke furniture for world-class estates, he has returned to the core of the craft: mentorship.
"He doesn't just teach carpentry; he mentors the next generation in the discipline of the craft."
Safety protocols, wood species selection, and the "Measure Twice" philosophy. Students receive their workshop journals.
Introduction to hand tools. Precision cutting techniques and the art of the perfect chisel strike.
Building the core project. Understanding wood movement, clamping, and structural integrity.
Sanding, oiling, and the "Meister Branding" ceremony where Joachim hand-brands the finished projects.
